  1. Personality

Your wedding day is a whirlwind from hair and make up to walking down the aisle to trying to talk to all of your friends and family. But the one constant is the photographers and videographers documenting each moment. While the goal is for them to simply be a fly on the wall, you still want to be surrounded by people who make you feel comfortable on the best day of your life. Especially when it comes to your couple portraits, an awkward relationship with your videographer will translate in the footage. Find someone you can be creative with and vibe well with so your video will show the love you have with your partner, not the awkward half smile last seen in your middle school photo.

  2. Deliverables

There’s nothing worse than unmet expectations, especially when you’re not sure what you expected in the first place. Every wedding videographer is different from their style to the kinds of videos they deliver. This may mean anything from a one minute trailer to a one hour full film to several hours of raw footage. Decide with your partner what’s most important to you and what memories you want to hold onto, then pay careful attention to the final videos you’ll receive from the videographers you’re considering. There’s no wrong answer as long as your expectations are communicated.

  3. Pricing

Weddings are EXPENSIVE, but are still totally worth it if you’re getting the biggest bang for your buck. Once you figure out what your budget is for a videographer, find one who has the best value in your price range. Whether that means the best quality, the most deliverables, or somewhere in between, as long as you are happy with what your money is going to. A helpful tip: when talking to videographers ask if there are any additional fees, taxes, add-ons, or even flexibility in the prices. The initial pricing guide may not be the final answer.

  4. Delivery Time

Just like the rest of the world, the wedding industry is speeding up in response to the social media era. Historically, and for many videographers still, 6-8 weeks is the average delivery time. Depending on the videographer’s business model and size, some are able to finish videos within 1-2 weeks. If you’re a social media guru and this is important to you, find someone or talk to the videographer you love, to see if an expedited edit is a possibility. Even if that’s not a priority for you, still ask about delivery time so you can tell your family and friends exactly when they can expect to see it. Mom is going to want to know.

  5. Experience

Videography can be like the hair salon. Some companies are Great Clips, it’s a huge company so you’re not sure who you’ll be working with or even how long they’ve been working. Kind of risky but it can work out. Then some companies are the local salon with hair stylists who have been there for years and the whole town knows them. You may not have worked with them before, but there’s a lot of people that will vouch for them. New isn’t always bad, and experienced isn’t always good, but making sure you know who is showing up on the day of your wedding is a must.

  6. Audio

Wedding videos are all about telling the story photos can’t quite capture. While a photo may say a thousand words, a video can say a million. A huge part of that story is the sweet words you share with your partner in your vows or letters. So as you’re scrolling through videographer’s galleries, wipe away those tears and listen closely to how their audio sounds. Think about when you’re showing your kids your video in 20 years. It’ll probably be on some holographic tv and not have the quality you once remembered, but the most important thing is that you can hear the vows you promised to your partner that started this family.

  7. Style

Wedding photography has been grouped into three different overarching styles: light and airy, dark and moody, and classic and timeless. Just like photo, videography can be categorized, but rather than based on how it looks, it’s based on how it’s formatted; cinematic, short form, storytelling, documentary, traditional, and music video. When decision fatigue is setting in and you still have the dreaded seating chart ahead of you, there’s no time to scroll through ten pages of Google results. To make your search as efficient as possible, decide what style you’re looking for first, then find a videographer who specializes in that style.
